Kamloops Art Gallery - "The Drawings and Paintings of Daphne Odjig: A Retrospective Exhibition"

Upcoming Dates: Sunday, June 8 - Sunday, August 31, 2008

The Kamloops Art Gallery proudly presents The Drawings and Paintings of Daphne Odjig: A Retrospective Exhibition, which opens at the Gallery Sunday, June 8 and runs until August 31. This exhibition, organized by the Art Gallery of Sudbury and the National Gallery of Canada, comprises 58 works of art created over four decades by one of Canada’s most remarkable artists. “Visitors to this exhibition will be enthralled,” said the Gallery’s Acting Director, Beverley Clayton. “Those who had the privilege of experiencing the Odjig print exhibition here in 2005 will now have the opportunity to experience the full breadth of Odjig’s work, and those who missed that exhibition will have the opportunity to see some of Odjig’s most evocative works!”

Three public programs complement the exhibition:

Curator’s Tour, June 8, 1:00 pm – free with regular admission
Join exhibition curator Bonnie Devine for a special guided tour of the exhibition. Ms. Devine is a visual artist and independent curator from the Serpent River First Nation in Northern Ontario. She began to develop this exhibition in 2004, when working as the set and costume designer for the Alanis King play, The Art Show, which was based on Odjig’s life. Devine’s tour covers the histories and major themes of Odjig’s work as well as behind-the-scenes stories of the making of the exhibition.

Film Screenings, June 12, July 10, August 14, 7:00 pm - free
The Life and Work of Daphne Odjig is a 48-minute documentary film produced by First Voice Multimedia in Winnipeg. The film traces Odjig’s life, often referencing specific works she has produced over the years to tell her story.

Sunday Guided Tours, June 22, July 6,20, August 10,24, 1pm - free with regular admission
Join Secwepemc artist and educator David Tremblay for guided tours of the exhibition The Drawings and Paintings of Daphne Odjig. Tremblay is intimately familiar with Odjig’s life story and art practice, having guided many popular tours of the exhibition Daphne Odjig: Four Decades of Prints in 2005. A natural teacher, Tremblay brings great detail and humour to his exhibition tours.

The exhibition is sponsored by British Columbia Lottery Corporation, Simmons, Black and Emsland Insurance Services, and TD Securities. The media sponsors are Kamloops Daily News, Kamloops Thompson Nicola Review, and Radio NL.
