The new Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre, which opened in 2006, is a family-oriented cultural attraction. Visitors can explore the rich living culture of the Okanagan people and the unique plants and animals of the surrounding desert habitat. The 22 hectare site contains cultural exhibits, walking trails, outdoor sculptures, and hands-on interactive displays. Highlights include a reconstructed aboriginal village, “Critters Corner” animal exhibits, and daily guided walks and rattlesnake demonstrations in the summer. Two theatre experiences transport audiences back in time and show life on the reserve through the eyes of an aboriginal teenager.
“Coyote’s Gifts” boutique, located in the centre’s foyer, displays Firsts Nations crafts, art, books, clothing, and giftware. Light snacks are sold and kids will enjoy crafts and nature toys relating to the desert habitat. The award-winning rammed-earth building is an architectural marvel, sensitively built into the hillside using sustainable building techniques. The centre is owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band and is part of Nk’Mip Resort that includes an RV park and campsite on the lake, golf course, restaurant, hotel, spa and Nk’Mip Cellars award winning winery. Located 1 km east of Osoyoos, off Highway 3.
