Let your spirit of adventure soar in Wells Gray Provincial Park, BC's fourth largest provincial park with over 515,785 hectares or almost 1.3 million acres of wilderness. Wells Gray is known worldwide for its incredible mountain scenery and a plethora of waterfalls. Easily accessible sub-alpine flower meadows and glacial lakes are dotted over the southern slopes of Trophy Mountain. This action-packed day trip combines breathtaking views and exhilarating wilderness recreation.

  • Start your day with a 3-hour white-water rafting trip down the Clearwater River with Interior Whitewater Expeditions (www.interiorwhitewater.bc.ca). Get your heart pumping as you paddle through exhilarating Class 2 – 3 white water. On a hot day, there is nothing more refreshing!
  • After your morning on the water, spend the afternoon in the mountains. Many lodges and ranches in Wells Gray who offer guided horseback riding. Spend the afternoon enjoying the awe-inspiring views of the Clearwater River valley and mountains.
  • Drive into the heart of the park and explore its many magical waterfalls. Spahats Creek Falls is the first one you'll encounter, where Spahats Creek tumbles over a 61 metre cataract into a canyon of the Clearwater River far below. Dawson Falls is Wells Gray's "mini Niagara,' where the 91 metre wide Murtle River cascades over an 18 metre cliff. A few kilometres downstream from Dawson Falls, hear the muffled roar of Helmcken Falls well before you get there. The Murtle River plummets 137 metres into the plunge pool below, and is one of BC's most oft-photographed waterfalls.
  • Hiking in Wells Gray Park is second to none. With 25 marked hiking trails throughout the park, you are destined to see some of British Columbia’s most pristine scenery. If guided hikes are more to your liking, check out Kanata Wilderness Adventures Tours (www.kanatabc.com). You can also can pick up hiking maps at the Clearwater Visitor Info Centre. Come July, the meadows near Trophy Mountain are awash in wildflowers.
  • Amazingly enough, you can even sneak a game of golf in! Play nine holes at the Wells Gray Golf Resort & RV Park, just 20 minutes from the entrance to the park. The incredible Trophy Mountains provide a majestic backdrop as you play in this little paradise. However, don’t let the peaceful setting break your concentration – this is a challenging course that will test golfers of all handicaps.
  • The Clearwater Valley Resort & KOA Campground is the perfect place to set up as a base camp, or to simply relax and rejuvenate before hitting the road for your next Thompson Okanagan adventure. The Clearwater Valley Resort is comprised of a motel, 52 Ridge Restaurant and KOA RV Park.
