Osoyoos to Summerland to Kelowna to Vernon (3 hours)
- Start your day in Osoyoos with a visit to the Nk’mip Desert Cultural Centre (www.nkmipdesert.com). The Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre, located in Osoyoos, British Columbia celebrates thousands of years of Okanagan First Nations habitation on desert lands. The Nk'Mip Desert lands are one of Canada's three most endangered ecosystems and are home to many endangered plant and animal species. The Centre provides on-site cultural tours, interpretive programs, and interactive displays reflecting the unique and contemporary experience of a desert centre based on the rich heritage of the Okanagan people. Located next door is Nk’mip Cellars (www.nkmipcellars.com), North America’s first Aboriginal owned and operated winery. The winery site is one of the most attractive in the South Okanagan with outstanding views in a setting of natural beauty. Situated on a bench overlooking the shores of Osoyoos Lake, the site is adjacent to Canada’s only tract of natural desert land while the newly planted vineyards and orchards provide a stunning contrast.
- Before departing Osoyoos visit the Desert Centre. The Desert Centre is an interpretive education and research facility offering insight into this sensitive ecosystem. Tour the elevated boardwalk or take in one of their many interpretive programs. Maybe you’ll see one of the many rattlesnakes, black widow spiders or scorpions from a safe distance!
- Continue your travels north along Highway 97 to Summerland. Enjoy a wonderful lunch, tour, and wine tasting at Sumac Ridge Estate Winery (www.sumacridge.com) and the Cellar Door Bistro. Since its inception, Sumac Ridge has pioneered innovative winemaking practices in the Okanagan Valley. Sumac Ridge was the first British Columbia winery to plant extensive vineyards of premium red vinifera grapes, the first to produce traditional sparkling wines, and the first Canadian winery licensed to make Meritage wine.
- Travel north to Kelowna. Enjoy your afternoon at Kelowna Land & Orchard Company (www.k-l-o.com). Kelowna Land and Orchard Company, a 140-acre working farm, is one of the largest and most modern orchard operations in Canada. Bring the family and enjoy a guided tour on a covered farm wagon through the orchards and take in the breath-taking views of Lake Okanagan and the City of Kelowna below. Visit the petting zoo and farm store with a great selection of fresh fruit, preserves, local crafts, and souvenirs. Be sure to try their own delicious 100% pure fresh-pressed apple juice made on site and their homemade apple pies!
- The last stop of the day is Silver Star Mountain Resort (www.skisilverstar.com), located 22 km from Vernon. Welcome to summertime at Silver Star Mountain Resort, where the snow has melted away and the mountain has blossomed into an unparalleled array of greenery and wildflowers. Ride the chairlift and hike through the pine-scented forests to a scenic picnic spot, or rent a mountain bike and explore the magnificent trails coloured with alpine flowers. Take part in an abundance of activities and excursions the whole family will enjoy! You may want to stay for dinner to conclude a busy day in the Okanagan. Clementines restaurant provides a classic Victorian atmosphere in the turn of the century themed village of Silver Star. They fuse cuisine and northwest favourites that could perhaps be paired with a great bottle of BC wine you tasted earlier in the day!
